Published: Fall Travel Edition, 2025

Nothing says fall in the United States like a spooky visit to Salem, Massachusetts. While peak season runs from the last weekend in September through Halloween, Salem is a year-round destination—easily accessible by train, car, or plane and welcoming millions during the fall.
I visited this captivating city during the last weekend of September, which turned out to be the perfect time. Though the weather was warmer than expected for fall, that didn’t stop this foodie from indulging in an apple cider mimosa, Edgar Allan Poe-inspired coffee, and fresh seafood along the Salem coast.
Places to Eat:
1. The Ugly Mug Diner - the cutest diner around. With chef specials on the board to classics and themed drinks. This place is a must try, however, the diner is small and fills up fast. The earlier you get there the better. Positive note, the line moved fast with small parties!
2. Fatties - If you are craving something sweet after dinner, Fatties is your place! Some of the best gourmet cookies that go perfect with soft serve! Side note, I found the cookies tasted their best when warm, and who doesn't love a warm cooking!!
3. Finz Seafood & Grill - Finz is one of the best seafood spots in town. I highly recommend making a reservation, even for lunches during peak season. Honestly, they day I went, I wasn't in the mood for seafood, so I got their burger, and it was a pretty good burger. Those around me got everything from sushi to seafood tacos. My friend even wanted something not of the menu and the team there made adjustments to suite her craving.
4. Turner's Seafood - While I did not physically eat at this restaurant, it proves to be very popular. The menu looks delicious, but the real fascination lies with the location. This building dates back to the Salem Witch Trails of 1692 and is the site of Bridget Bishop's apple orchard. Bridget Bishop was the first person executed in these trails and is still seen in the upstairs storage area of this restaurant!! Staff here are not allowed to go upstairs alone, as Bridget loves to surprise them. That alone makes me want to take another visit just to eat there.

Tours to Experience:
1. Haunted Footsteps Ghost Tour - A great entertainment tour. Our guide was a very dramatic professor that only added to the story telling. Was worth taking this evening adventure.
2. Ultimate Witches and Witchcraft of Salem Walking Tour - Absolutely my favorite tour of Salem!! Our guide was so knowledgable and not only spoke on the history of the city, but also indulged in some spooky tells. After this tour, I actually wanted to visit The Witch House that some say is definitely haunted and get a weird feeling in the place. She also made me want to stay at one of the haunted hotels, which is weird for me, seeing I don't like to be scared.
3. Hocus Pocus Movie Guided Walking tour - While I did not take this tour, I did visit a few of the sites on my own. It is a go to tour however if you are a lover of the movies!!
4. The House of the Seven Gables - The Seven Gables house was not what I expected, however, was pleasantly surprised. This location is strictly about the history here and isn't believed to be haunted, but the views on the water and grounds are absolutely beautiful.
Places to Shop at or Just Explore:
1. Ye Olde Pepper Candy Companie - One of the oldest and cutest little candy shops I've been to, and one step into this quaint building a flood of childhood memories capsulate you. It is said, that a persons sense of smell has a direct pathway to your memories, and boy is this true. From good old salt water taffy to house made fudge to the bubble gum cigars, a lifetime of childhood fun floods in and makes you want to try it all. A definite go to when in town.
2. Blackcraft - While I was unsure of what I was stepping into with this shop, rest assure it is absolutely awesome. If eager to try this coffee cafe, make sure you book ahead, especially during spooky season. Reservations for the cafe are a must, but from the looks of it, a must try. During my visit however, we did not visit the cafe, but did go into the shop, where all types of goodies await, including the largest witch on a broomstick!! While I did pick up so amazing coffee beans to try at home, I did try their pumpkin root beer, and OMG, out of this world!!!
3. Salem Common - Another site on the Hocus Pocus tour, the Salem common is a great outdoor space that offers a cute outdoor market with local vendors. During spooky season, there is also a DJ that entertains both locals and visitors alike. Just a great environment to enjoy the cooler weather with family and friends.
4. The Witch House - While I did not get a chance to go into this notoriously creepy house, those who have, say be prepared. It is said, that this location is definitely haunted by the spirits who lived there and that is a feeling one senses the moment they enter the home. When speaking to our tour guide, she as a young child went in and it was too much for her to try to go back in as an adult now. Her sentiments were echoed by those on this tour with us, that they too got the sense they were not by themselves, that the spirits let them know, they were there. This house should be toured by those who truly enjoy knowing they are not along in this world.
